国王は「洗足式は、私の心の中でとても特別な場所にあります」と述べた。

そして、朗読した聖ヨハネによる福音書の一節について、「使徒達の前にひざまずいて彼らを大変驚かせ、困難に疲れた彼らの足を洗った主の生涯に由来するものです」と説明した。

また国王は、イエスが「どのように奉仕し、互いを思いやるべきかの模範を示した」と述べ、「私達は、特に困っている時に友情の手を差し伸べてくれる人達を必要とし、その恩恵を大いに受けているのです」と付け加えた。

メッセージの中で国王は、昨年5月に執り行われた戴冠式礼拝の冒頭で述べた、イエスの模範である「仕えられるのではなく、仕える」に従うとの誓いを回想し、「私はそのことを常に心がけてきました。そしてこれからも、心からそうするつもりです」と続けた。

当日は国王の代理でカミラ王妃が出席し、男女それぞれ75名の高齢者達に特別な銀貨“モーンディ・マネー”を贈呈した。
