まるで“サイの赤ちゃん”のようである。また皮膚は引きつり、ピンク色の腫瘍が鼻孔や口から飛び出しているのが分かり、腫瘍から出血があり痛みが酷いという。また慢性の頭痛にも悩まされており、ヴァイオレットさんは数々の試練に直面してきた9歳の甥への思いを、次のように明かしている。

「誰もが『シンバラシェは呪われている』と言うの。でも、あの子が痛みで苦しんでいるのを見るのはとても悲しいし、他の子と遊ぶこともできず、普通の生活さえ送ることができないことは本当につらいことよ。彼は柔らかい食事しか受け付けず、飲み込むことが大変で、今では話すこともほとんどできない。また視界も狭く、服を着るにも助けが必要で、このまま放っておいたらきっと亡くなってしまうでしょうね。」

「みんなが甥の健康を心配しているし、私たちは病気について多くの人に知ってもらおうと一生懸命努力してきた。ただ、あの子にどれだけの時間が残されているのか、私たちには見当もつかないわ。だって余命を教えてくれる人が誰もいないから。」

なおヴァイオレットさんは、「手遅れになる前に、甥にイギリスで手術を受けさせたい」とクラウドファンディングサイト「GoFundMe」に専用ページを設置して寄付を募っており、目標額約1294万円（6万5000ポンド）に対し、日本時間7月26日の時点で約690万円（3万4681ポンド）が集まっている。

そして、シンバラシェ君には「この世界は本当に残酷だよ」「これはつらいだろうね。早く手術ができるように祈っている」「神様、お願いだからこの子を助けてあげて」といったコメントが多数寄せられているが、ヴァイオレットさんは「もう一刻の猶予もない」と考えているそうで、今の胸のうちをこのように明かした。

「甥は普通に生活できて当然であるべきで、私たちは全てがうまくいくように、そしてあの子が苦しむことなく生きられるように望んでいるわ。マリアはシンバラシェが健康であることや、彼のことで悩まなくても済むように心から願っているのに、腫瘍はどんどん大きくなっているの。」

「シンバラシェは美しく、頭の良い子で、苦しみなんて必要ないわ。あの子はとても明るくておしゃべりだったのに、最近は大人しいの。腫瘍が邪魔で話すことができなくなってしまっているからね。でも私たちはただ、彼に幸せな人生を送って欲しいだけなのよ！」

ちなみに2022年には、顔が腫瘍で覆われ「モンスター」と呼ばれるアメリカの13歳少年が注目され、母が「普通の生活をさせたい」と涙を流して訴えていた。
