2017年にペプシのコマーシャルに出演して炎上。CMはデモの中でケンダルが警察官にペプシを渡して歓声があがるというストーリーで、このシーンが2016年に米ルイジアナ州で撮影された写真に似ていると指摘され炎上した。当時の写真は黒人男性が白人警官に射殺された事件を受けて起きた抗議デモ中に、黒人女性レシア・エヴァンスさんが機動隊の前に颯爽と立ちはだかった時のもので「黒人の命は大切である（Black Lives Matter）」運動の象徴的なシーンとして話題となった。そのため、人種問題がペプシだけで解決できるほど簡単ではないという批判があがっていたのだ。

人種問題について、アメリカでは髪型やメイク、服装1つで炎上へと発展するため、注意を払わなくてはならないようだ。
